Hyundai Unveils Vision for a Sustainable Mobility-Focused Future
At CES 2024 in Las Vegas this week, Hyundai Motor Company revealed a bold vision for the future, placing emphasis on a transformation powered by hydrogen and driven by software, extending beyond conventional mobility applications. Under the theme 'Ease Every Way,' Hyundai highlighted its commitment to lead human-centered innovations, centered around hydrogen energy, software, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Hyundai Motor Group has set a mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with a roadmap that includes the use of 100% renewable energy in its overseas factories by 2045. Hydrogen energy plays a pivotal role in this journey, with Hyundai projecting to uptake 3 million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2035. The company aims to harness hydrogen across various sectors, from passenger cars and trucks to trams, power generators, ships, and advanced air mobility.
The HTWO brand, initially focused on fuel cell systems, has expanded to become the commercial brand of the Hyundai Motor Group in the hydrogen value chain domain. HTWO covers the entire spectrum of hydrogen, including production, storage, transportation, and utilization. Hyundai's commitment extends to the development of innovative technologies such as megawatt-scale polymer electrolyzer (PEM) for green hydrogen production and resource circulation hydrogen production methods.
Hyundai's emphasis on resource circulation hydrogen production includes Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H) and Plastic-to-Hydrogen (P2H) technologies. W2H involves the fermentation of organic waste to generate biogas, which is then converted into hydrogen. P2H, on the other hand, includes melting waste plastics, gasifying them, and producing hydrogen by eliminating unnecessary elements. Hyundai actively participates in global hydrogen projects, with initiatives in Indonesia showcasing waste-to-hydrogen solutions.
Software-Defined Everything (SDx) Strategy: Hyundai's ambitious vision, known as 'Software-defined Everything' (SDx), aims to redefine vehicles, fleets, and transportation systems through advanced software and AI. Hyundai envisions a user-centered mobility ecosystem where vehicles, fleets, and transportation systems are defined and developed by advanced software and AI. The ultimate goal is 'Cloud Transportation,' a concept where software, AI-defined devices, and mobility converge to create an interconnected ecosystem, offering on-demand access to transportation services.
Hyundai's commitment to software advancements and AI is strengthened through partnerships, including collaboration with Tenstorrent, a company specializing in designing neural processing units (NPUs). This strategic alliance enhances Hyundai's capabilities in software and AI, aligning with its vision to provide reliable and secure mobility experiences.
At CES 2024, Hyundai showcased its waste-to-hydrogen production, hydrogen value chain, SDV technologies, and concepts for future mobility. Participants had the opportunity to explore Hyundai's comprehensive approach to a human-centered future, where hydrogen energy and software technologies play a central role.
Hyundai's vision for the future combines the power of hydrogen energy and software-driven solutions to create a sustainable and user-centered mobility ecosystem. The commitment to carbon neutrality, innovative hydrogen technologies, and a transformative SDx strategy position Hyundai as a key player in shaping the future of clean and intelligent transportation.
